What To Expect? Sharing My Thoughts!

As new moms, we carefully sift through the mountains of books and countless pages on the Web, hoping to find answers to our latest parenting dilemmas. One resource that I think you’ll find both bookmarked and in print on the nightstand of most moms is What To Expect.

Author Heidi Murkoff and team of online experts have every topic covered, so you can imagine my excitement when I was approached to share my real life mom experience with the readers of What To Expect!

I hope you’ll take a second to read my thoughts on being a mom of two small children. If you have experience on the topic, I’d love for you to share your thoughts in the comments on my post and further this great community of moms online!

If you are new to my blog, start here. Then take a second to read some of my thoughts on parenting, see my favorite party, and get some baby sewing inspiration.

I hope you’ll click around both sites and enjoy!

Newborn Health: A Guest Post

Photo Courtesy of Holly Lauer Photography

Today I am pleased to share a guest post with a few quick reminders about Newborn Health.  There are so many great resources out there to help care for our precious babies, and Alex reminds us of some key topics to consider.

What to consider for your newborn’s health

When parents bring home their newborn for the first time, they are likely to have a rush of mixed emotions: happiness, stress, fear, excitement and dread may all come to mind.  In fact, the first few weeks at home with a new baby are some of the most hectic a parent will ever know.  Over time, parents will get the hang of it, but may have some general questions about their baby’s health.

Before baby comes home

Expectant families have much to consider before the baby even comes home, including issues such as finding a stem cell bank.  While umbilical cord blood donation is still not widely discussed, it is something all parents should consider.  Cord blood is rich in stem cells that have been proven to be effective in the treatment of a number of diseases and the list is growing all the time.  Parents may elect to bank their baby’s cord blood for their own personal use in the future, should the need arise or to donate it so that someone in need may benefit.

Cord blood collection is painless, non-invasive, and can end up saving a life.  At no time is any blood taken from the baby – only the umbilical cord after the baby has been delivered.  Neither mother nor baby will even be aware of the collection, which happens moments after birth.

General health considerations that may surprise new parents

New parents are often very nervous simply because they don’t know what to expect when they bring the baby home.  Newborns seem small and fragile, but they are actually much more resilient than many people think.  Babies grow quickly and learning how to bathe, burp, diaper, feed, and travel with them can be a real challenge.

One of the most surprising elements of a newborn’s health is that they are actually quite funny looking – but there is little cause for alarm.  Babies have just spent nine months in the womb, so they may have a covering of fine hair called lanugo, a puffy face, and swollen-shut eyes.  After a few days or weeks, they grow into the beautiful bouncing baby most people imagine.

Other than the way their baby looks, many parents are concerned about the soft spot and the umbilical cord.  While special care must be taken with each of these areas, newborns aren’t as fragile as they seem.  It is a good idea to give the baby a sponge bath just until the umbilical cord falls off, but after that, an infant tub is just fine.  Just remember to keep the cord as dry as possible – it will fall off faster that way.  The soft spot is also cause for concern, but parents shouldn’t worry too much.  It’s all right to touch the baby’s soft spot gently!

Vaccinations newborns typically need

Vaccinations can be scary for babies and parents alike, but they are a necessary evil to protect the child from life-threatening diseases.  While immunization shots will hurt and result in a cranky newborn, they are crucial for health.  Most doctors recommend a regular immunization schedule that includes shots for hepatitis B (HepB), rotavirus (RV), diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis (DTaP), haemphilus influenza (Hib), pneumococcal conjugate (PCV13), polio (IPV), measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR).  Other vaccinations that parents may elect might include varicella (chickenpox), hepatitis A, meningitis, and the flu shot.  These shots all vary as to when the baby should get them, though most begin after 24 weeks and up to two years of age.

8 Ways Being a Stay at Home Mom has Shocked Me

Photo Courtesy of Holly Lauer Photography

1.  It is easier to control a band room of over a hundred hormonal teenagers than your own toddler.

Not more than a few months ago, I could stand on a conductor’s podium, and that single visual cue would silence a room of ever-gossiping teenagers.  These days, no visual cue in the world stands up to the strong will of one Mr. Cheeks.

Learning how to control your toddler is a very humbling, and as a good friend recently reminded me, “raising a decent human being is an exhausting experience.”

2.  Getting to see your son love his newborn sister will wipe away every temper tantrum that has challenged me that day.

I was most looking forward to witnessing each and every moment of Addison’s development.  What I’ve learned that I really enjoy is the interaction between my children.  Connor’s compassion and pride in his baby sister have completely shocked me.  I totally expected a jealous sibling, one fighting for every ounce of attention he could get.  While we certainly have those moments, Connor has quickly established himself as the doting big brother, and I am so glad I’m here to see it.

3.  It can feel shockingly lonely at times, despite the fact that I no longer have any personal space.

For days on end now I am never alone.  Never.  Yet usually around 4 in the afternoon a sense of solitude sets in.  I’m working on solutions for this one.

4.  Bodily functions play a huge role in the everyday now.

In the last month, I’ve both cried and cheered about various “presents” my children have shared with me.  In the midst of cheering for something that resides in the toilet bowl, I realized life has really changed.

5.  I am learning to be present and to listen more than I talk.

This is a big one.  I am not one to whom it comes naturally to play with Little People.  I am definitely guilty of scrolling through my Facebook News Feed, while halfway paying attention to my children.  Although it is a steep learning curve, I am happy to report that I am gaining confidence when it comes to being present and enjoying the play that we are doing.

I am also learning the power of listening to those around me, and trying to understand them before sharing my opinion.  This one is powerful for the infant all the way up to my husband.

6.  I often look like I am either going to exercise or just did, but really I just haven’t showered yet.

I started out strong, keeping up the makeup and put together appearance.  Fatigue has set in.  I’ve got a plan to fix this one – stay tuned.

7. Despite sending my son to preschool three days a week, I have become passionate about playing more of an active role in his education during the time we spend together.  I still struggle to follow his lead.

As I continue to write this post, I am seeing a theme of control throughout my points.  I suppose that anytime you make a life change, there is a huge desire to find control in your new circumstances.  That said, I am seeing how much time I have with my children as a captive audience during the day now, and what an opportunity that is.  I am excited about teaching Connor (and eventually Addison) everything I can, but have to reign in my inner Tiger Mom.

8.  Putting my own selfish desire for praise and career advancement on the back burner and trading it for being a full time mom has been easier than I thought.

I worked very hard to achieve success in my ten years as an educator.  I had serious anxiety about not having the personal fulfillment of a career.  I’m not exactly sure why yet, but not working outside of our home right now hasn’t been nearly the personal sacrifice that I thought it would be.

The debate about working versus staying home ignites strong feelings in women, and I understand why.  I’m taking this journey one day at a time, and feel fortunate that, for the time being, my path has lead me right here to my home.

Guest Post: Teaching the Bible To Your Children

I’m continuing to welcome guest bloggers to Addington Mom today as I spend my time caring for our new family of four.  As I mention all of the time, there are so many wonderful places to visit in the blogging world, and it has been exciting to plan these posts and share different perspectives here.  Today’s guest is Amanda from The Pelsers – A Shelter for the Heart.

I asked Amanda to share her expertise on sharing the Bible with your children.  Although I haven’t done any faith based topics on Addington Mom, I felt that this might be interesting to other parents that are answering the endless precious questions that come from your child.  Our son is starting to make connections between what he learns at church and our lives at home, and so I wanted to know how to be more deliberate about teaching him about the Bible.  I hope you’ll enjoy this post, and maybe share your favorite resources in the comments section.

How to Get Started Teaching the Bible to Your Kids

God calls you as a parent to lead your kids to Him. You are their guide on this path.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:5-8

Being responsible for your kids’ spiritual development can be in a word – overwhelming. If you didn’t grow up in the church, you might might think that being responsible for the discipleship of your kids is impossible. Even if you did grow up in the church, you might not feel adequate for the job.

Let me reassure you that God did not give you an impossible task. You are the perfect person for this job because you know your kids better than anyone else. You know their strengths and their weaknesses. You how they learn and how to reach them.

So, how do you get started teaching the Bible to your kids?

Keep it simple. Just start by reading to your kids. Depending on the age(s) of your kid(s), you might want to start with a story Bible instead of the full Biblical text. This is especially helpful for little ones. If you need some help, try these tips for choosing a childrens Bible.

When you’re ready for more, here are three more resources you might find helpful:

My boys enjoy listening to an audio Bible. They like to go to sleep listening to the Bible on an iPod in their room at night and at nap time. The Word of God is soothing to them and they’ve grown to love the stories. Now my older son even asks for certain stories, books, or chapters and follows along in his Bible. You can find audio Bibles for various versions of the Bible. We have this ESV version read by Max McLean. There are plenty of options out there, including dramatized options.

Another favorite resource of ours is the Whats in the Bible? DVD series. This DVD series has been put together by the creator of the Veggie Tales series. It’s meant to give a book by book, section by section, overview of the whole Bible. Various stories and theological concepts are introduced and made understandable for kids. As a parents, you’ll laugh and learn along with your kids.

Want to dig in a little further but keep it simple? Try Grapevine Studies. These are easy to use Bible studies that incorporate drawing stick figures and timelines to help your kids understand and retain facts from various stories in the Bible. You can choose from various characters or books or an overview of either testament.

Ready to get started? Jump in! Want more help? Take a look at my weekly Kids in the Word series for more resources and ideas for teaching the Bible to your kids.

Life Right Now

Because moms approach parenting so differently, and there isn’t anyone around to chat with at 2 or 3 in the morning, celebrating the successes and coping with the difficulties of a newborn can feel lonely.  My family and friends surround me each day, and still there are times in the first few weeks that are a struggle.  Call it hormones, but I can be crying about how beautiful our new family is one minute and struggling to maintain sanity during those fussy hours the next.

There, I said it.  It is a dichotomy of extreme peacefulness and even more extreme fits of rage (from baby not from me…okay, maybe me, too).

This time around, I realize when Addison cries, it is because that is the only way she can communicate.  And sometimes, she is simply letting me know that she’s in a bad mood.  Not hungry, dirty, or tired.  Just not particularly happy.  And although it is much easier to have a conversation with my three year old, who will give you a short dissertation on why he is upset, babies just don’t come that way. Learning to recognize the varying decibels and subtlties of those little cries is part of the game.

What are the challenges?

Fatigue.  Sleep deprivation has a weird affect on your ability to cope with things and see life in a rational way.  If you add up all of the little times I lay down, it appears that I am sleeping all the time, but there is something about not getting long periods of sleep that make it alot less rejuvinating.  Without sleep, I find that the first thing to go is my patience.  Not a good thing when you are trying to balance being a loving wife, and a loving mom to your first child and the new baby whose needs are quite mysterious.  Nevermind my  other relationships or the household duties.

Bringing it back to the Positive….

For me, the biggest key is finding short periods of time to myself.  After the 5:15 am feeding this morning, instead of going back to bed (with no guarantee of sleeping there), I got up and made a pot of coffee.  I enjoyed a bowl of cereal, and now am enjoying time to write.  I don’t have to feel guilty, because I’m not neglecting anyone or anything; everyone else is still sleeping.  But I have quiet time to myself to think, pray, be still, and start the day with good positive thoughts.  I personally find that taking this time actually gives me more energy and puts a smile on my face faster that that extra hour or so of sleep would have done.  Hopefully, I will be able to sneak in a little sleep here and there throughout the day, and I will appreciate that bonus.

How about you?  If you are a mom that is reading this, what are the challenges you’ve faced in those first few weeks home from the hospital?  How did you handle them?  Did you sometimes feel alone in that journey?

I’m back to my cuddles, and will share a great guest post and exciting product review later this week!

Looking In: An Interview with a Makeup Expert

I recently had the pleasure of getting my makeup done for my sister’s wedding by an amazing makeup artist, mom, and entrepreneur, Jennifer Duvall.  In addition to making women look amazing, she shares her secrets on her fantastic blog, JennySue Makeup.  With the tagline “Mommy with a Makeup Problem“, Jennifer gives extremely practical advice and inspiration to those of us with limited time and a limited budget.  She has numerous how-to posts helping with the actual application of those celebrity looks you want to achieve.

Intrigued by the story behind this energetic, fun, and inspiring mom, I had the pleasure of Looking In and learning more about Jennifer:

Share your favorite photo taken this month…(included above) and a bit of the story behind it.

This picture obviously warms my heart bc my daughter borrowed (snagged!) a few of my new SOHO Beauty Brand brushes and took the liberty of practicing her makeup artist skills on her baby dolls.

Where do you find inspiration?

From anything and everything!! It could be the color of a flower growing in my backyard that I decide I want to mimic in my eye shadow color, or even what I dress my kids in for the day.  It’s all about my mood when I wake up as to what I’m going to find inspiring that day.

What is your favorite beauty tip?

Oh no, trying to pick just one is like asking me to pick my favorite child…and I have 3 of them!! I’d have to pick 2- keeping a shimmer peachy pink lipstick in my purse that can double in a minute as a lip color and a blush. I’d also say using a white or flesh colored pencil to line my inner waterline to brighten my tired red eyes up in a flash.

What is your “Daily Uniform”?

I definitely do not have a uniform.  Variety is the spice of life for me!! The only constant go to outfit would be denim – jeans, shorts, or shirt.  Both work when I have no idea what to wear!!

How would you spend the perfect day alone?

I ALWAYS dream about this.  First, I would sleep in until 8am and drink my coffee while watching whatever I wanted to on TV.  I would then clean out things I don’t have time to clean with the kids around- like cupboards and closets. Then I would spend the remainder of the day going shopping alone, Sephora would be my #1 store of choice!  I could seriously spend hours and hours in there.  Oh, and I’d throw a nap in there somewhere.

How have you seen just a little makeup knowledge change women?

A little knowledge, can go a loooong way!!  The women that have never used concealer in their life until I introduce it to them, wow, what a difference it can make in their complexion.  Which in turn can take years off, literally years.

 Right Now I’m listening to…

whatever is on pop radio. But I do love listening to Amy Winehouse and Adele mixed in with my love of teeny bopper stuff.

One blog you love that my readers may not know?

Rockstar Diaries.  taza-and-husband.blogspot.com It’s this cute couple documenting their life with their 2 kids and dog.  The pictures are really beautiful and they just look so happy all the time!! I only read blogs that make me happy and are positive.

If you could tell your 20 year old self one thing what would it be?

Wear sunscreen on your face everyday and be more adventurous and bold – get out and see things and travel if you can!! Because traveling with kids is hard to do!

What advice would you give moms that want to launch their own business, yet still be devoted to their family?

Like Nike, JUST DO IT!!  Of course women with children are already overwhelmed with just basic child care and rearing and surviving, but there is something comforting (albeit hectic!) about having a side business that is just yours.  That your hobby or passion for something can shine through, and doesn’t have anything to do with diapers and sippy cups!  I know that I could never have started my business without the support of my husband, it was actually his big idea!!  He’s got my back even when I get overwhelmed with my business, even if that means giving someone a bath so I can respond to emails.

Tell us about the event you have coming up….

I am hosting my first ever makeup workshop here in Athens and I am super excited!! This is one of the ways I am hoping to expand what I do with my business.  I don’t want to always just PUT makeup on people, I want to TEACH them and share the knowledge of makeup application and techniques for the everyday woman who wants to put her best face forward.  I think being comfortable with your appearance is a big confidence booster, and your face is one of the first things people notice when they meet you.  With this event, I just want to incorporate everything I love -  makeup education, girl time, blush, and a little bit of champagne!!

Some Kind of Wonderful: A Bit of Our Baby Story

Welcome, Addison Grace!

{Seen}

On Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 1:56 pm I saw one of the greatest miracles of the world   Bright lights and people swirling around us, I caught the first glimses of my baby girl.  At 8 pounds 12 ounces and 20.5 inches long, she suprised us all with her size!

{Experienced}

A childbirth experience that was as polar opposite as the genders of my TWO children.  Instead of laboring strenously for hours at home, then another half day at the hospital, I found myself with a face full of makeup and hair that was straight and unmatted!  We calmly arrived at 9 am, and watched and laughed as things went like clockwork.  My little sister ended up being in the room with Hubby and I because Addison arrived so quickly, she became trapped behind the talbe of tools.  As I let my eyes wander around the room, holding Addison in my arms, there was my sister croched in the corner on the floor, saving herself from mearly passing out!  I hope I’ll still have a neice or a nephew from her new little family!

{Tasted}

A Deli Sandwhich (lovingly delivered by my inlaws and son), Sushi (a mini date night with hubby in the hospital), hommade cookies from friends that shared a special visit with me

{Heard}

I heard what everyone holds their breath waiting for.  I heard a beautiful shrieking LOUD cry!  I heard my voice,, almost as though coming from a different body confidently comforting her meanwhile chocking back floods of tears.

{Smelled}

The unbelievable calming scent of a new baby.  I don’t know what Johnson and Johnson puts in that yellow bottle, but it is pure magic.

{Loved}

I am filled with more love than I ever knew possible.  My love for my husband and my two littles is unimaginable.  I am aslo filled with love for the village of people that emerged over the last few days.  My family and freinds shared hugs, kind words, and tears.  Facebook constantly illuminated my phone with well wishes from speical people from every stage of my life.  How cool is it to get congratulations from your husband, your 7th Grade Math teacher, your best friends, and relatives near & far – all in the same place ?!?!

Thank you.  Whether you are just a casual reader of my little blog that has smiled while reading my words or one of the infinate happy hearts that have supported me over the last few days, you have made this an incredublly special time.

Guest Post: A Stylish Wardrobe for the Busy Mom

I’m excited to welcome some wonderful bloggers to Addington Mom while I am busy welcoming our new baby into the world.  There are so many amazing women that I’ve “met” through blogging, and I’m excited to share them with you.  If you are interested in Guest Posting here at Addington Mom, read this for more information.

Today I welcome Amy from Forever 29, who is sharing three different adorable looks for the Mom on the go!  She covers it all here, so be sure to leave her some comment love and thank her for the excuse to go shopping!

I am excited to be posting for Katie today while she is soaking up precious new baby snuggles.  I’m Amy from Forever 29, a busy mom of two sweet, rambunctious little boys and a lover of all things fashionable.

Fashion is something that can easily fall by the wayside when you become a mom, but I’ve lived to tell that you can keep your stylish side in tact.  Finding pieces that are comfortable and can hold up to the yucky things that motherhood brings is key.

Busy Mom Around Town

Old Navy is one of my favorite stores to shop for tees and dresses, like the one above, that are flattering and won’t break the bank.   For quick errands, carrying a fun tote with room for diapers, wipes and sippy cups is a good alternative when you are oh so tired of hauling your heavy diaper bag.

Busy Mom at the Park

For more active endeavors, like trips to the park, shorts and tees are my top fashion picks.  A fun necklace dresses the look up a bit (and will always fit!)  Sturdier shoes are ideal if you need to make a quick dash across the playground as I am accustomed to doing.

Busy Mom Date Night
Date nights may be few and far between, but every mom needs a dress that makes her feel pretty.  Paired with neutral heels and a sparkly clutch you will be ready to go minutes after covering details with the babysitter.
While there will certainly be days that you will be operating on 4 hours of sleep and really won’t care that you are wearing a stained college t-shirt to the store when you run out of diapers, they will pass quickly and taking the time to find the outfits that flatter you will boost your mommy morale.

10 Must Try E-Books

Questions swirl around me about the many topics central to my life right now and reading advice from those that have done it before me brings comfort, confidence, and knowledge.  One of the trends I love most in the world right now is the ability for anyone to write and publish their own E-Book.  Not familiar with E-Books?  Here is a great article from the Wall Street Journal about E-Book’s impact on the way we read and write.

There are countless E-Books out there, many free.  Keeping within the topics I focus on here at Addington Mom, here are 10 that I love right now:

Splish Splash! Connor’s Third Birthday Party

 Splish Splash Water Party

Connor Turns Three and Party Decor Ideas

I’m so excited to share some of the many pictures from Connor’s wonderful party we had last weekend!  It was a perfect mix of family and friends, and was the first time we had lots of children over to celebrate.  Thanks to all of the wonderful crafty inspiration out there, I was filled with party decor ideas, and I’m thrilled with how it all came together.  Links to all of the fabulous resources I found are included at the end of the post!

Being only 10 days from my due date at the party, I was fortunate to have so much help putting together the last minute details.  Being out of school for the summer and not worrying about work really helped make time for all of these ideas, too!

Every balloon, ounce of icing, and craft was completely worth it when I saw the excitement and joy all over Connor’s face!  He couldn’t have been happier on his big day.

Dessert tables are so popular right now, and since we had so many kids coming this year, I thought it would be so fun to try my hand at creating one.  After the backyard water fun, each kid got to come in and choose as many sweet treats as their parents would allow, and it was a huge hit!  The parents jokingly let me know that after all of the sugar, that their children would be spending the night with ME - ha!

Here’s the Birthday Boy just slightly excited.  I love having a special outfit for big occasions, and I love the way this beach ball shirt perfectly matched the invitation and all of the decor.  Stephanie from Stella Bella Originals does beautiful work if you have something special coming up.  Stay tuned for the adorable Big Brother/Little Sister shirts she made and I hope to reveal VERY soon!

Warning: Balloon Wreaths are not for the weak or those crunched for time.  I absolutely LOVE the way this turned out, and how I can use it for years to come.  BUT, 400 balloons later and car trips spent scouring Northwest Atlanta for floral pins does not a happy mama make.  Making one of these beauties is very easy, but being nine-months pregnant during one of the nation’s hottest summers and having some time on my hands was the only way I got this done!  Sigh.

You can read about how we built these shelves in our kitchen here.  I enjoy changing them out seasonally and for special occasions, and they made the perfect backdrop for the dessert table.

Here’s a sneak peak at some of the water activities we setup in the backyard to keep those energetic toddlers on their toes.  I plan to do another post about the activities, as they were a huge success and there are so many more photos to share!

The kid’s table was just steps from all of the water games, so it was easy contain our little grass covered munchkins.  They loved being able to go back and forth between the water and their dinner.

All of the printed designs were from the talented ladies at Nico and LaLa.  They did fantastic work at our Father’s Day Party, and I couldn’t have been happier with these birthday party designs.

As each tired toddler dried off and headed home, they got to take a personalized beach bucket.  My silhouette got a workout, but I had fun pairing the vinyl colors with the bucket and I thought these turned out so cute!  We added their own beach ball (which they loved playing with at the party) and another water toy.  Top it off with just a little more candy, and there were some big smiles over these favors!

Happy 3rd Birthday, Connor!
